SAM supports the call by the Consumers' Association of Penang to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) to immediately withdraw the Malaysian proposal tabled at the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) calls on the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Department of Standards (Standards Malaysia) to immediately withdraw a Malaysian proposal that it has tabled at the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) negotiations. We believe that this proposal will have potentially dangerous impacts on public health, food safety and consumer choice.

SAM has been informed by Penan villagers in Sungai Patah, Baram that their native customary land is now confronted by a double threat simultaneously. The first threat comes from the attempt of a logging company to encroach into their communal forest reserve which has been successfully protected since the people’s last blockade in the area in 2008-2009. The proposed construction of the Baram Dam meanwhile poses another looming threat to their lives.

Ancaman pertama adalah percubaan sebuah syarikat pembalakan untuk mencerobohi hutan simpan kampung mereka yang telah berjaya dilindungi daripada sebarang pencerobohan semenjak blockade terakhir mereka sekitar tahun 2008-2009. Sementara itu, ancaman kedua pula ditimbulkan oleh cadangan pembinaan projek hidro Empangan Baram.
