SAM urges stern action to be taken on polluters of Sungai Rui

Press Statement                                     8 April 2019

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) is concerned with the recent arsenic pollution in Sungai Rui Gerik, Perak as not only is it affecting the water quality and the marine eco system but the lives of humans are in danger if the problem is not addressed immediately.

Thus, SAM urges the Perak government, department of Environment (DOE), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JAS) and the local authority to conduct continuous monitoring in order to ensure that the mining operation which is believed to be the cause of the pollution no longer carries out unlawful activities.

SAM regrets that eventhough Sungai Rui has been polluted for more than 30 years, yet no adequate action has been taken by the parties involved to overcome it. SAM believes that if the condition persists, there would be threats and adverse effects resembling the disasters that hit Sungai Kim Kim in Johor.

SAM gesa tindakan tegas diambil ke atas pencemar Sungai Rui

Kenyataan Akbar                                     8 April 2019

Lynas Perlu Hentikan Memberi Maklumat Mengelirukan Mengenai Sisa Radioaktifnya

Surat Kepada Pengarang                          6 April 2019

Is the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) Safe?

Comment                             05 April 2019

On 08 July 2014, 15 people including the current Bentong Member of Parliament Wong Tack were charged for protesting against Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) in the Kuantan Sessions Court. 10 of them were charged under Section 145 of the Penal Code and 5 others under Section 147 of the same. On 06 July 2018, all 15 were found guilty and fined between RM1,500 and RM1,600. An appeal was filed against the conviction. On 13 March 2019, all 15 withdrew their appeal against the government. During their case at the Sessions Court in Kuantan, Mr Chan Chee Koon, a former professor at University Malaya with a strong list of credentials was called to give evidence on whether the plant is safe. He prepared a full statement basing it on background documents he was privy to where he reviewed them and gave his professional view. Read his full statement here.

Lynas should stop misleading information about its radioactive wastes

Press Statement                                     4 April 2019

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) and the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) state that Lynas should stop misleading the public about its wastes.

We say this in response to Lynas Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. that our statement carried in the media today “is factually inaccurate” when we said that the wastes from the water leached purification (WLP) process should be removed from Malaysia, as these wastes cannot be regarded as naturally-occurring radioactive material (NORM), but are in fact technologically-enhanced, and have been made dangerous by technological processes.

It is indeed misleading of Lynas to claim as “a scientific fact” that the WLP residue is “naturally occurring.” Lynas claims that “there is NO technological enhancement of the low level, naturally occurring radionuclides (Thorium and Uranium).”

Kenyataan Menteri Pembangunan Usahawan mengenai Lynas Tidak Dapat Diterima

Kenyataan Akhbar                                  3 April 2019

Entrepreneur Minister’s Statement on Lynas Unacceptable

Press Release                                         3 April 2019

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) and the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) are shocked by the recent statement of Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, who had said that Lynas Malaysia should not be compelled to export its wastes back to Australia, as the plant’s investments are “too big to ignore”.

We find the Minister’s statement completely unacceptable as it clearly reflects that he is putting the profits of the company over and above the safety of the Malaysian people and the environment.

Moreover, it is not the Entrepreneur Minister’s mandate to interfere with the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC), who is responsible for handling the toxic and radioactive wastes generated by the Lynas Plant in Gebeng, Kuantan.
