The trade in reptiles

Letter to Editor                                       1 February 2019
The   media report  on the seizure of live baby crocodiles at Sibu airport   is not a new incident.  A similar incident occurred in May 2018 in which  an illegal shipment of 50 live crocodiles from Malaysia were seized by border officers at Heathrow Airport.
The shocking truth is the manner in which the year old  juvenile saltwater crocodiles were transported.  These reptiles weighing around 40kgs, had not been packed in accordance with International  Air Transport   Association (IATA) regulations, invalidating their permit and making the importation illegal.

They were discovered in horrific condition  by Grant Miller, head of the national Border Force Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) at Heathrow who commented,  “It is just not acceptable for reptiles to be transported in this way.”

Each box only had room for four crocodiles but instead 10  foot-long reptiles had been packed into each one.  Due to very limited space the crocodiles started fighting each other during the flight resulting in the death of one saltwater crocodile.

Apart from contravening of CITES regulations, this is a clear example of how Malaysian wildlife exporters and traders are only into profits without any regard for animal welfare.  Squeezing as many reptiles into a box  while limiting the number of boxes used  in order to save costs is the norm for these wildlife exporters.

Penang State must make public findings of investigations into Jalan Bukit Kukus landslide tragedy

Press Release                                          31 Jan 2019

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) and the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) call on the Penang state government to make public its findings into the Jalan Bukit Kukus landslide tragedy and to disclose the conditions under which works are being allowed to proceed.

This call is made in the wake of works being allowed to proceed on the road, following the lifting of stop-work orders issued by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health as well as the Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP), as reported in the media today.

Given that the State had carried out internal investigations on the tragedy which occurred on Oct.17 which saw the loss of 9 lives, it is vital for the findings to be made public, so that there is transparency in the process.

We would like to know if the relevant authorities are being held accountable for their inactions in relation to the tragedy.

Press Statement                                     30 January 2019

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) is shocked that the sole surviving mangrove forest on government land in the middle of Pekan Baru Batu Maung and adjacent to the Bayan Lepas Industrial Park is threatened by irresponsible dumping of waste.

Subsequently, the brackish river flowing through the mangrove forest here is inevitably polluted by leachates into a sensitive ecosystem sustained by the mangrove forest located at the back of the Fisheries Research Institute Malaysia.

In the 1960’s before the development of the Penang Airport, Bayan Lepas Free Trade Industrial Zone and other development, this area was fringed by thick mangroves. Most recently in the past few decades, there remained about 20 hectares of mangrove forest. However due to recent intrusive activities, two areas totalling about 15 percent of the entire area have been rendered barren.

Press Statement                                     19 JANUARY 2019

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) welcomes the first of a kind civil suit brought by the Federal Government against Kelantan. SAM applauds the Government's seriousness and sincerity in recognising, respecting and upholding the rights of the Orang Asli in the country as per our Constitution.

For long, indigenous communities, the country's most marginalised have been struggling to have their voices heard and their rights recognised through various means. With this suit, we hope that the Government will begin looking at reforming all laws and policies put in place during the old regime which have stopped short of respecting and recognising the customary rights of indigenous peoples.

Drains at Batu Maung polluted by residual waste

dirty river in Batu Maung                        Picture : SAM

Media Statement                                       17 January 2019

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) urges the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Department of Environment (DOE) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to investigate and take immediate action to overcome residual waste pollution problem in drains near Batu Maung here.

Investigations made by SAM shows that the condition of the area is very disgusting and has foul smell. Drains here are not only filled with variety of residual waste including plastic but also the water in it is of dark black colour and is foamy.

Near the channel at the side of the drain, reddish fluid spots are visible and it is very dubious and worrying is it contains harmful substance.

SAM believes that is the drain is not clean and the act of throwing residual waste carries on, pollution problems in this area will spread especially during rain where all the waste will be carried by the current to the sea.

Concerns are more if the residual waste contains toxic substance causing more harm to the environment, human life and sea life in the coming future.

Longkang di Batu Maung dicemari sisa buangan

Keadaan Sungai yang kotor                    Gambar : SAM

Kenyataan Akhbar                                  17 Januari 2019

Harimau Semakin Terancam

Kenyataan Akhbar                                  14 Januari 2019

Harimau kita semakin terancam! Kewujudannya semakin lenyap.

Penyebab kepupusan harimau amat jelas.
