Defending Territories, Defending Our Lives

Today, on International Human Rights Day, Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific (FoE Asia Pacific) launches its latest publication, Defending Territories, Defending Our Lives - a grim reminder that everyday, somewhere on this planet, environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs) are being threatened, defamed, assaulted or murdered for defending their territories. This publication highlights seven (7) case studies from Friends of the Earth member groups in this region which show, in some cases, the extreme conditions that environmental human rights defenders are living in to defend themselves, their families and the territories in which they live.

Hari ini, pada Hari Hak Asasi Manusia Antarabangsa, Sahabat Alam Asia Pasifik (FoE Asia Pacific) melancarkan penerbitan terbaharu, Defending Territories, Defending Our Lives – satu peringatan yang serius bahawa setiap hari di mana sahaja di atas muka bumi ini, pembela hak asasi manusia alam sekitar (EHRD) diancam, difitnah, diserang atau dibunuh kerana mempertahankan wilayah mereka. Penerbitan ini mendedahkan tujuh kajian kes daripada ahli kumpulan Sahabat Alam di rantau ini yang menunjukkan dalam sesetengah kes, pembela hak asasi manusia yang terpaksa hidup dalam keadaan yang ekstrim untuk mempertahankan diri mereka sendiri, keluarga dan wilayah di mana mereka tinggal.

In solidarity with Indonesian colleagues, Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) joins civil society groups around the world to call on the Indonesian government to launch a thorough and transparent investigation of the suspicious death of human rights defender, Golfrid Siregar. We are endorsing an international call on the Indonesian government to urgently protect its human rights defenders.
SAM is at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Penang today to participate in an international action in delivering the shared concerns of over 200 civil society groups on this issue to Indonesian Embassies around the world. Groups across Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and others will personally deliver our collective letter of solidarity and concern to Indonesian Embassies.
